Services: Performance
Evaluation & Tuning
TRIDENT Services staff members have
completed numerous highly successful projects
for clients in the often complex arena of tuning large z/OS enterprise
server environments. A few of these projects are discussed below.
For a major property development firm TRIDENT Services provided performance
measurement and tuning services which resulted in dramatic improvements in batch run
times for all critical applications. The project included reviewing hardware and
software configurations along with processing schedules; using realtime monitoring
tools to analyze workloads; identifying batch processing bottlenecks and
inefficiencies; providing immediate recommendations and actions for quick relief of
the most significant performance issues; completing a written report of actions taken
as well as recommendations for ongoing actions to be taken by client staff to ensure
high performance levels.
For a major bank credit card operation TRIDENT Services conducted an enterprise
server and storage performance evaluation. Based on staff findings numerous
recommendations were made as to MVS library structures; SWAPABLE address spaces; CICS
VSAM LSR pools; CICS DATATABLES; purchase of additional tuning software; usage of
CACHE and DASD Fast Write on all CICS volumes; dedication of batch and online
volumes; SETCACHE settings, VSAM file allocations and DFSMS implementation.
Recommendations were also made as to MVS/ESA configuration, installation of PR/SM and
addition of main storage. Most recommendations have been carried out by the client
with resultant improvements in getting maximum value for its investment in resources
in a tight budget situation.
For a leading discount brokerage operation TRIDENT Services conducted a complete
audit of installed operating systems software. The audit included providing an
inventory of all program products installed broken down by responsible organizational
group; definition of current maintenance and release levels; definition of program
products back leveled on maintenance and release levels; software totals by vendor;
unsupported software; unlicensed and/or unsupported software found in online storage;
definition of overlapping system software functions; and, recommendations for actions
to be taken. The client took decisive action based upon the results of the audit with
attendant savings in software license fees.
